Loss ATA – From PCs to Suit Pockets

Data is everywhere. No longer confined to desktop computers, data is always with us – in the gym as an iPod ® in the car via your cell phone, and of course surrounding you at work – portable, desktops, servers, etc. with the increased portability of data comes the increased risk of data loss, lost, damaged or destroyed.

A study from Ontrack Data Recovery conducted among 400 professionals worldwide revealed that 65% of professionals have at least a USB drive. The compact size means that many people keep their sticks incorrectly – in the pockets of demand or in bags – leaving valuable confidential data at risk.

To help protect mobile devices from data loss, Ontrack Data Recovery has developed a series of simple steps that will help to create good habits for the use of USB sticks and hopefully prevent any data loss.

1. Minimize loss – Try to avoid ‘wandering’ USB sticks. The device is easily lost when we do not know exactly where it is stored. A site dedicated USB prevents loss of data from a portable storage device.
2. Move with care – Make sure the USB is stored safely when traveling to minimize the risk of losing data.
3. No backups, please – A USB stick is too vulnerable to store valuable information. These sticks should therefore never be used as a backup device.
4. Put a lid on it – if used ensure that it protects your USB connector. Using the protective cover provided with any USB device, a possible disaster, data can be avoided
5. Disconnect before you leave – Before embarking on a journey that requires a laptop and a USB stick, make sure the devices are separated. Thus, both the laptop and the USB device, less risk of damage

With the use of mobile storage devices increasingly common, it is essential that people understand that there are options available if your data disappears. Ontrack Data Recovery is an expert in recovering data from storage devices of all sizes – from multi-terabyte servers to small xD flash media.
